The Selva Central Project is a large-scale reforestation and agroforestry initiative located in the Andean-Amazonian transition zone of Peru. Covering 5,600 hectares of degraded lands, the project aims to restore biodiversity, capture carbon, and improve local livelihoods through the planting of native tree species and the establishment of sustainable agroforestry systems.
The project is designed to balance ecological restoration with community-driven economic development, making it a model for sustainable land-use practices in tropical forest regions.
The Selva Central Region is one of the most biodiverse areas in the world, home to endangered species, indigenous communities, and vital watersheds that feed into the Amazon Basin. However, deforestation and land degradation have impacted the region, threatening its ecosystems and the livelihoods of local communities.
By reforesting degraded areas and promoting sustainable agriculture, the Selva Central Project seeks to reverse deforestation, support biodiversity conservation, and combat climate change.
The project uses Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to tackle deforestation, land degradation, and climate change, focusing on the following core activities:
1. Native Reforestation (90%)
The project prioritizes native species such as Tornillo (Cedrelinga cateniformis), Shihuahuaco (Dipteryx ferrea), and Capirona (Calycophyllum spruceanum) to create long-term carbon sinks while enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem resilience.
2. Cocoa & Coffee Agroforestry (10%)
To diversify income streams for local communities, the project integrates cocoa- and coffee-based agroforestry systems with native shade trees, ensuring a sustainable balance between conservation and livelihoods.
3. Carbon Removal & Certification
The project follows the VERRA VM0047 methodology to ensure accurate carbon accounting and monitoring. It aims to remove millions of tons of CO₂ over its 40-year lifespan, issuing certified carbon credits to support global climate goals.
4. Community Engagement
The project works closely with indigenous and local communities, following Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) processes to ensure that community voices are heard and respected. The project creates green jobs, supports capacity building, and promotes benefit-sharing mechanisms to align community interests with conservation goals.
✅ Restoration of 5,600 hectares of degraded lands with native species.
✅ Removal of 2.2 millions of tons of CO₂ through long-term carbon sequestration.
✅ Creation of over 300 green jobs in reforestation, agroforestry, and forest management.
✅ Biodiversity enhancement through the preservation of native forests and wildlife habitats.
✅ Community development through sustainable livelihoods and capacity building.
✅ Certification under VERRA standards for carbon credits and climate impact.
The Selva Central Project adheres to international best practices in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards, following the IFC Performance Standards to ensure:
The Selva Central Project is more than just a reforestation effort — it’s a long-term investment in nature and people. By aligning climate action with social impact, the project aims to build resilient ecosystems and thriving communities for generations to come.
Through carbon removal, biodiversity restoration, and community partnerships, we are leading the way in sustainable land management in Peru’s Selva Central region.
